Vaikobi is proud to announce a new collaboration with Tai Paddles, bringing together a shared passion for paddling, performance, and cultural respect through the launch of two limited edition PFDs inspired by the traditional Māori Pūhoro design.
At the heart of this collaboration is renowned Māori wood carver, artist, and Tā Moko practitioner Alex McLeod of Ariki Inc, whose design work brings deep cultural significance and storytelling to the project. His interpretation of Pūhoro transforms the PFDs into moving expressions of heritage, identity, and connection to water.
The Pūhoro is a foundational Māori design representing the dynamic movement of water. Traditionally seen in large-scale tā moko, as well as in whakairo (wood carving) and on the hulls of waka (war canoes), the design is derived from the wake of a speeding canoe. It reflects the interconnectedness of the natural world - particularly waterways - and embodies flow, speed, and energy. Often incorporating the niho taniwha (shark tooth) pattern, Pūhoro also signifies leadership, strength, and lineage.
This collaboration celebrates not only the artistry of Pūhoro but also the culture of Va’a paddling, where respect for the ocean, teamwork, and performance are deeply intertwined. Both Vaikobi and Tai Paddles share a genuine connection to this world; not just as brands, but as active participants in paddling communities and competitive teams.
“This project is about more than design,” said Pat Langley, CEO and Founder of Vaikobi. “It’s about honouring the traditions and stories of the water, while creating high-performance gear for athletes who live and breathe it. To partner with Conan and Lana Herbert from Tai Paddles on this collaboration is a real privilege and we are excited to see them on the water!”
The two PFDs, one in Teal/Black and one in Grey/Pink, blend technical innovation with cultural storytelling, reflecting the values both brands stand for: performance, authenticity, and respect for the ocean and its heritage.
The Tai Paddles Vaikobi V4 PFDs in Grey/Pink and Teal/Black are now available for purchase via vaikobi.com or Tai Paddles.com.
