PADDLING IN WARM WEATHER (SUMMER)

Warm weather and long summer days means more time you can spend paddling - but heat, intense UV exposure and prolonged time on the water can quickly take their toll if you're not wearing the right gear.

Protecting yourself from the sun while staying cool is essential for both comfort and performance. Vaikobi’s UV paddling apparel is designed to help regulate your body temperature, reduce sun exposure and keep you comfortable, even during the hottest sessions.

  • Recommended Tops For Warm Weather

Explore our range of UPF50+ tops that keep the sun off your skin and allow heat and moisture to escape so you can keep your cool.

PADDLING ALL YEAR ROUND (4 SEASONS)

Vaikobi's all-season paddling apparel has been designed to adapt as conditions change.

For many paddlers, the best conditions are found in the in-between seasons, where cool mornings turn into warm afternoons, the wind picks up unexpectedly or the weather shifts throughout a long session. That's why versatile paddling gear is such an important part of any kit. Clothing that performs across a wide range of conditions allows you to spend more time on the water without constantly changing what you wear, making it ideal for training, racing and recreational paddling throughout the year.

  • Recommended Tops For Moderate Conditions

Explore our range tops that thermally insulate, allow the body to breathe, and protect from the sun.

Choose between UV Tops (warm conditions), Base Layers (cool), or Thermal Tops (cold) depending on the season.

OUR MOST ASKED PADDLING QUESTIONS, ANSWERED:

How do I layer for cold weather paddling?

The key to staying warm while paddling in cold conditions is a three-layer system, each layer serving a specific purpose:

  • Base layer — a VCOLD thermal top sits close to the skin, trapping warmth and wicking moisture away as your output increases. Choose between the Base Layer Top (Warm), Hydroflex Top (Warmer), or Flex Top (Warmest) depending on conditions.
  • Mid layer — a FlexForce wetsuit adds serious thermal protection and wind resistance without restricting your paddle stroke. The 2mm is ideal for cool to cold conditions; the 3.5mm for freezing temps.
  • Outer layer — a VDRY smock or 1/2 zip vest blocks wind and water spray, keeping your core dry throughout the session.

Don't forget your extremities — neoprene socks or water shoes for your feet, and paddling gloves for your hands. Read our cold water paddling guide for the full breakdown.

What is the best life jacket for kayaking or paddling?

Vaikobi make life jackets and PFDs specifically for paddlers, designed to keep you safe while allowing full freedom of movement through your paddle stroke. The two most popular choices are:

  • V4 Ocean Racing PFD — lightweight, breathable, and built for long sessions. Two front pockets fit the 500ml hydration bladder, plus a large back pocket for the 1.5L bladder. Available in high-visibility fluro colours. The go-to for surf ski, kayak, OC, and downwind paddling.
  • VXPII — sleek, high-sitting profile with a large front pocket for a 1L hydration bladder and rear pocket for the 1.5L. No side panels for unrestricted paddle rotation. Popular with OC1 racers and surf ski paddlers who prefer a closer, higher fit.

Both are ISO 12402-5 (Level 50) certified. Read our PFD fit guide and how to choose the right PFD for more detail.

What do I wear on my legs while paddling?

Protecting your seat and legs while paddling for long periods makes a real difference to comfort and performance. Vaikobi offers options across all conditions:

  • Warm conditionsUV paddle shorts or pants in quick-dry, UPF50+ fabric for sun protection without overheating.
  • Cool conditionsVCOLD paddle pants with neoprene padding in the seat area for warmth and durability. Choose between the Hydroflex Pant (Warm), Flex Pants (Warmer), or GBS 3mm Paddle Pant (Warmest) depending on conditions.
  • Cold conditions — for the coldest sessions, step up to a FlexForce 2mm wetsuit pant or the VCOLD GBS 3mm Paddle Pant for maximum protection.

What is the best UV top to wear for paddling in the heat and sun?

For long sessions in warm and sunny conditions you want lightweight UPF50+ protection that doesn't restrict your stroke. Vaikobi has two options:

  • UV Ocean Tech Range — Vaikobi's premium UV line. Breathable, quick-dry VLight fabric built for serious time on the water. Available in long sleeve, short sleeve, hooded, and quarter zip styles. A popular choice for teams and clubs thanks to subtle tonal branding.
  • Rash Top Range — extremely lightweight close-fit lycra tops with UPF50+ protection. Available in long sleeve and hooded styles. The hooded rashie is the most popular choice for paddlers who want full face and neck coverage on long downwind runs.

How do I look after my paddling gear to make it last?

The golden rules across all Vaikobi paddling gear: rinse in fresh water after every session, always dry in the shade rather than direct sun, and never pack away damp.

  • UV rashies and tops — avoid chlorine where possible and dry inside out to keep colours vibrant.
  • PFDs — never squash or fold the foam and store in a ventilated area.
  • VCOLD thermal gear — if water repellency drops off over time, apply gentle heat with a hairdryer or warm iron to reactivate it.
  • FlexForce wetsuits — rinse in cold fresh water and always dry in the shade. Never put in a dryer or leave in direct sun.
